Wild Birds Unlimited Celebrates its Biggest Year for Development and Growth in a Decade
The brand will award 20 new franchises by the time 2016 comes to a close.

For more than 30 years, people have been relying on Wild Birds Unlimited to connect them with the nature through its top tier backyard bird feeding products and unbeatable customer service. Now, the brand is opening the door for more consumers to experience all that it has to offer at record breaking rates.

With 19 signed franchise agreements in place and another one expected to become official in early December, Wild Birds Unlimited is on pace to meet its goal of awarding 20 franchises in 2016. The leading franchise concept has been building towards this goal for a long time—the milestone marks its biggest year for development and growth in a decade.

“We’re thrilled to be adding 20 new franchises to Wild Birds Unlimited’s ever-growing network this year. That’s an ideal number for us—it is well within the limits of what we can support from a new owner standpoint, allowing us to grow at a strong, but controllable, rate,” said Paul Pickett, Chief Development Officer for Wild Birds Unlimited. “At Wild Birds Unlimited, we’re incredibly selective when it comes to the new owners we welcome into our system. Not only do we want to ensure that they’re a good match for the brand, but we want to be able to give them the support and guidance that they need from the moment they sign their franchise agreement.”

It’s not surprising that Wild Birds Unlimited is reaching its 2016 development goals. The brand also celebrated record breaking growth last year by increasing its number of awarded franchise units by 50 percent, from 10 to 15. But it isn’t luck fueling this consistent success—Wild Birds Unlimited has been actively taking steps to boost its development efforts.

“We’ve really taken the time to raise our overall brand awareness over the past couple of years. Our new owner team is stronger than it has ever been, and we’re more proactive with our approach to engaging prospective franchise owners. Something as simple as linking to our premier financing partner in our first communication outreach with potential candidates has made a noticeable of difference,” said Pickett. “Even our marketing efforts have been elevated—Wild Birds Unlimited is doing everything it can from a corporate standpoint to get the right candidates through its doors.”

The brand’s impressive momentum isn’t expected to slow down any time soon. In fact, Wild Birds Unlimited already has a number of signed commitments in place that are expected to become final in 2017. That means that the brand is already right on track to repeat its successful results again next year.

“When it comes to franchise development, there are going to be great years, okay years and rough years where awarding franchises becomes a challenge. But no matter what type of year you’re having, it’s essential to stick to your core beliefs, values and mission. You can’t be entranced by the shiniest object in front of you and start drifting,” Pickett said. “That’s one of our top priorities at Wild Birds Unlimited, which really speaks to the great leadership team we have in place. Everything we do from a development standpoint is designed with our strategic partners, franchisees and customers in mind.
